::: independent study request form

     Independent study allows students to explore academic areas of special interest not normally provided by the existing curriculum.   As much as possible should be limited to 4th year students.  The following criteria should be considered. An independent study:

  • a) should not be created during the semester prior to the course being offered
  • b) should not be a student's 6th course
  • c) should not be created because a student has stepped out of the sequence of courses because of Academic Leave
  • d) could be created due to a graduation requirement
  • e) could be created to take advantage of a visiting professor's expertise
  • f) could be created because the course is not generally offered at LCC
  • g) could be created because we cannot provide a course due to lack of faculty for the course
  • h) could be created because of a double major situation where two required courses are offered at the same time

     A maximum of 4 courses (16 credits) can be earned through independent study, with no more than one course (4 credits) per semester.
     If the instructor with the appropriate specialization agrees, the student and instructor complete an Independent Study form, available from the registrar.  The contract must have the approval of both the Department Chairperson and Academic Vice President prior to registration and be submitted to the registrar no later than the end of the Add/Drop period within the semester.
