mission statement
The mission of the English Department is to assist students in the development of skills for both study and practical life.
To realize this mission, the English Department has four goals:
- to help all students develop competence in reading, writing, and oral communication;
- to assist students in developing communication skills for effective personal and interpersonal communication;
- to develop in students an understanding that literature is both a reflection of life and part of the developing literary map of society;
- to provide foundational study of literature and language for English majors that prepares them for further study or career.
career opportunities A graduate in English Language and Literature is prepared to pursue graduate studies in literature, English language, teaching or translation. A graduate may pursue a career in journalism, advertising, translating and interpreting, teaching English, or public relations. A graduate is also prepared for any career which requires a broad-based liberal arts education.
